Re: Topic 4 DQ 1

Not only should nurses advocate for patient safety, but they must also advocate for their fellow colleagues. One way in which a nurse leader can promote change on behalf of staff members is through collaboration. According to the article, Advocating for Nurses and Nursing, author Karen Tomajan states that nurses must build trusting relationships with others to develop the support necessary to address an issue and promote change (Tomajan, 2012). This can be done through communication, seeking input, and providing on going reports on the progress achieved.

Nurse leaders must also encourage open communication amongst their staff as well as a culture that values feedback to identify areas in which need change. According to the text, Nursing Leadership and Management: Leading and Serving, author Jennifer Thomas stated that by promoting this type of environment, leaders can increase engagement, lessen stress and anxiety, and promote higher employee satisfaction, all of which lead to greater patient outcomes (Thomas, 2020). In the end, nurses are unable to provide safe and quality patient care if they themselves are not provided for.

Re: Topic 4 DQ 1

A nurse leader advocates for employees by ensuring they have a safe and reasonable practice environment. This includes providing employees with the personal protective equipment they need to carry out their tasks, as well as cleanliness of the work site. Ensuring employee resources that are needed to fulfill their job are available. This also comes into play when there are workflow changes or a workflow redesign. A nurse leader will also use their voice and position to advocate for the employees they lead to upper management (Tomajan, 2012). They understand that strong morale is important in reducing turnover as well as patient outcome and satisfaction. An effective nurse leader will model positive behavior in order to foster it among others. Discuss how nurse leaders serve as advocates for their employees

When employees are well advocated for, it enables them to have a healthy working environment and gives them motivation to devote themselves to work (Duquesne University, 2020) .This means that they become more efficient in providing quality health care to patients are able to effectively coordinate care which leads to improved patient care and improved patient outcomes.

Re: Topic 4 DQ 1
An advocate can define as an individual that defends influences, pleads and/or supports another person/cause or interest of another in order to raise awareness of a concern and to promote solution to the issue/problem. “When leaders support open communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills, staff are able to advocate more effectively for themselves and for colleagues” (Tonajam, 2012, para 5) as well as for patients. Nurse leaders serve as advocates through reasonable, safe, and tolerable working conditions, adequate pay, protecting from workplace violence, enforcing policies against violence and so much more (Nitzky, 2018).When nursing leaders advocate to obtain adequate resources for nursing staff, promote positive work environment, and support nursing empowerment then nurses can provide safe and effective care for patients. For example, nurse leaders have an impact in nursing staffing/ratios, and it can affect patient care and outcomes. Nursing leaders can advocate for safe ratios of patients to nurses which leads to safer, effective, satisfying and less stressful work environment for nurses and high quality care for patients.
