Leadership Style

Effective leadership within clinical practice settings is essential for healthcare practitioners to improve the quality as well as incorporation of accessible and cost-effective care. Leadership entails the behavioral aspect of directing as well as organizing various activities of inter-professional teams towards the attainment of collective objectives. Enhancing Nursing careers applies the integration of leadership capabilities that are already possessed by clinicians, which aids in the improvement of practice competence geared towards patient-centeredness and patient satisfaction (Sfantou et al., 2017). This paper will emphasize various self-evaluations encompassed within nursing leadership for improving job satisfaction and overall clinical outcomes for patient satisfaction.

Self-Assessment Tests

Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment Test

Emotional Intelligence self-assessment is essential for the maintenance of physical as well as psychological well-being of an individual. The creation of emotional intelligence should be an accompaniment for enhancing educational as well as practice setting outcomes together with the alleviation of risks for emotional distress in the process of clinical practice actions (Lewis, Neville, & Ashkanasy, 2017). Ensuring uniformity in the application of emotional intelligence self-assessment tests is a crucial aspect for the development of empirical evidence that is founded on health care education that is encompassed within nurse leadership qualities. The score that was attained on the emotional intelligence self-assessment test was 71(Psychology Today, 2020). This implies that I am rationally capable when considering aspects such as identification, pe

Personal Assessment Test

The universe is full of diverse people. This leads to individual differences in the work environment; some people will easily buy views, work behavior, and ideas of others. On the other hand, others will resist others’ ideas and will present their philosophy of work and life in general. Having done my personality test, my results show that I am an ESTJ. ESTJ refers to (Extraverted, Sensing, Thinking, Judging). These are combative and detail-oriented persons (Goby, 2016). Still, I will experience those traits that are the direct opposite of mine, and it is crucial to understand how I can join the differences between us to produce effective and efficient results within a healthcare institution. In the wake of my personality test, it made me what is referred to as the administrator, which is about 12% of the general population (Gordon, 2017). The results show 75% Extraversion, 59% sensing, 55% thinking, and 73% judging. These are fascinating results that show a picture of who I am in life and my ability to function as a Nurse with competence. According to Meehan et al., (2018), the basic way of living is enthralled externally, where one handles situations rationally and logically. An ESTJ, therefore, looks at what surrounds them and uses it to control their character and practices both at work and in everyday life activities. This allows ESTJs to be effective during project execution since they have a solid foundation for their work, which is crucial in nursing. Good work!

Ways of Incorporating Democratic Leadership Style

Incorporating a democratic leadership style in the healthcare organization should involve creating strong teamwork with focused members. It also involves encouraging subordinates to adhere to the interprofessional collaboration. The democratic leadership style involves the incorporation of people in the management process (Fiaz & Saqib, 2017). As a result, I would involve workers, including nurses, doctors, the management, and other healthcare professionals in the decision-making processes to formulate the policies that lead to the achievement of objectives and mission. In a healthcare organization, it is important to consider the contribution of everyone in the treatment process or disease prevention (Kilicoglu, 2018). Also, with evidence-based practices, the implementation of a democratic leadership style becomes easier as everyone is always involved in healthcare activities. Encouraging independent thinking is another way that I would use to ensure the implementation of democratic leadership styles in a healthcare organization. I would ensure that every activity being undertaken involved a number of people so as to gauge different perceptions and come up with an organized decision that can transform the operational processes.

Areas of Improvements Identified Through the Assessments

From the three assessments, I was able to identify different areas of weaknesses that require improvements. First, even though the test revealed that I have a high level of emotional intelligence, at 70%, adjustments are still needed when it comes to the decision-making processes and communication with people (Ekstrand et al., 2018). Also, from the learning style assessment, the focus should be on the visual learning styles; this is one of the critical areas in the learning processes. It encourages the absorption of ideas through visualization or practice.

Conclusion

Emotional intelligence tests, learning style assessments, and personality assessments are critical in understanding an individual’s abilities. The performance in these tests showed that I have high emotional intelligence while dealing with people. The outcomes also indicated that I am an extrovert, and my learning abilities are based on the visual and kinesthetic approaches.  All these outcomes may also be indicated in the creation of strong leadership skills.

Description

Welcome to Week 2

This week’s reading will examine characteristics of nurse leaders, analyze different theories and styles of leadership, and explore the nurse leaders’ role in influencing and developing organizational culture. As discussed in this week’s reading, nurse leaders must understand the challenges in health care, implement evidenced-based leadership into clinical practice, and transform health care through innovation.

There are several different approaches to leadership. Transformational leadership is the process in which leaders and followers motivate each other to attain and achieve levels of success. Servant leadership is the concept that leaders focus on the growth and well-being of people and the communities they serve. The servant leader shares power and places the needs of others first while assisting people to develop and perform to the highest standards possible. Principles of successful leadership include a commitment to excellence, building a culture around service, mold future leaders, focus of employee satisfaction, encourage individual accountability, and recognize and reward success.

This week’s writing assignment focuses on self-awareness and self-assessment. Self‐awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self‐assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self‐leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection.

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

Topic 2 DQ 2

The underlying principle of servant leadership is that leaders address the needs of the team before their own and serve others before serving the self. After reviewing the topic materials and conducting your own research on servant leadership, describe how the vocation of the nurse is similar to the goals of a servant leader. Identify any examples you have seen in your practice, and the best way you can demonstrate servant leadership in nursing practice.

Re: Topic 2 DQ 2
Servant leadership discusses the concept of a leader “serving” their staff. They work towards reaching a common goal by providing a service to their employees. Nursing is very similar to servant leadership because the nurse serves the public when providing care. The nurse is serving the sick and providing what is needed to heal their illness or disease. The goal of both is to provide a service to someone that is in need of the service (Neville, Conway, Maglione, Connolly, & Foley, 2019). In practice, I have seen many servant leaders on the nursing floor. I would consider most charge nurses to have a servant leadership style. They are in place to not only help serve the patient but to serve the nurses working on the floor that day. I worked with one charge nurse that everyone called “Mumma” because she treated us like we were her cubs and she always had our back when we needed her too. She was always willing to help out the nurses on the floor and continually answered call lights and provided patient care when it was needed. My current leader is also a servant leader. She is constantly looking for ways to provide care to her staff and make sure that we are whole as people and as nurses. If we didn’t have servant leaders in healthcare, we wouldn’t have nurses.

Re: Topic 2 DQ 1
I think that an effective leader does not have to be a manager, but an effective manager must also be a leader. A leader could be any person in any role—my mom is the principal of a large high school, and some of the best staff leaders in her school are the people who hold custodial jobs, jobs not typically known for their leadership qualities. Indeed transformational leaders can be so from any position, so long as they lead with moral and ethical perspective, and use coaching, inspiring, and mentoring to transform themselves and others (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). A leader focuses on relationships (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). A manager, on the other hand, is in a formal management role and must control and coordinate resources to meet goals (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Managers are naturally at the heads of organizations, which gives them an excellent platform to not only manage but to lead.

Advanced registered nurses hold management positions on my unit. We have the Nurse Manager, and several RN3 assistant managers that work with her. These RN3s split their time between managerial duties and office time, and charge nurse and occasional bedside patient care. Our RN3s are in formal manager roles, but are most effective when they also act as leaders on the unit. Fulfilling their managerial roles during office time is great and makes the unit run smoothly, but interacting with patients, families, and team members is what sets some apart. When RN3s lead by example, provide excellent and competent patient care, support and lift other nurses and team members up, and model interprofessional collaboration with effective communication, they transform from a manager to a true leader with managerial responsibilities.

Introduction

The concept of leadership is an essential part of the modern world due to the fact that it is one of the key determinants of successful management. Therefore, it is critical to be able to properly assess and evaluate one’s personality and its corresponding leadership style. The main reason is that leadership can be expressed in various forms. However, it is also important for a potential leader to have the capacity to communicate his or her vision.

Analysis of the Results

The test results suggest that as a leader, I possess a clear and precise vision for a company, but the biggest issue is that I might have trouble communicating my ideas. It also states that I should develop a specific set of communication skills, which will match my personality. In addition, I might lack self-assurance, which is crucial for any leader. Therefore, the main point of the test result is to encourage improving my communication skills.

Explanation of the Test Results

According to the test results, my biggest strengths are that I have a clear vision, I am mentally resilient, I do not get distracted by staying focused, and I have a great deal of determination. In the traditional culture of organizations built on hierarchy and control, personal power was probably the most important argument for persuasion. Employees who do not believe in the goal set for them will work with enthusiasm, by force, following the orders of the boss. As far as upbringing is concerned, here, it is necessary to take into account that sympathy greatly affects human relations and interaction (Crawford, Dawkins, Martin, & Lewis, 2019). The more people like a leader, the more willing they are to persuade and influence, and this is one of the keys to effective communication.

Nevertheless, my weakest leadership and personality traits are that I do not excel at communicating my ideas, I might lack self-assurance, I can have problems in keeping employees motivated, and employees might not share my passion. In addition, it is absolutely essential to build trust and be competent. Even if they like a leader, people may doubt that he or she has enough experience, knowledge, or information that would add weight to your words. The ability to build trust plays a huge role in persuasion, influence, and effective communication. A leader should think about how much the interlocutor sympathizes and trusts him/her and his/her words.

The Influence of Chosen Traits on My Leadership Style

Having a clear vision is a vital trait for a leader, thus, I will share it by communicating it through texts and images, because they do not directly require person-to-person interaction. My mental resilience will not only help me to stay focused, but it also can be used to make the company as resilient as possible. In addition, I, as a leader, who cannot get distracted, will remove all unnecessary distractions among employees and the workplace.

However, it is critical for me to develop strong communication skills in order to better communicate my vision and goal. My introverted personality can be used to my advantage by assigning personal meetings with my employees. Although I can have problems with keeping employees motivated, I can solve that by setting up an effective reward system in the workplace. My perceived lack of self-assurance can be eliminated by using my resilience during difficult times.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is highly important for a leader to have a clear vision and to be able to communicate it to his or her followers. My greatest strength is my resilience, which means that I always stay focused on the primary goal. However, I have issues in transferring the given determination and motivation to my employees. Thus, I should use my strengths to cover my weaknesses by communicating with my key employees on a personal level.

Test Results

“Even if you have a clear vision for your company, it is not an easy task for you to communicate these plans in a way that excites others. Employees likely won’t put a great deal of effort into achieving goals for which they share little or no passion. The manner in which you communicate your vision is essential. For instance, if you present your ideas to others in a manner that sometimes lacks self-assurance, they likely won’t go over well. People who excel in this area are innovative visionaries who are confident in their ability to persuade and convince others. They consider it essential to make those they lead aware of, as well as part of, their vision.”
