It is not unusual for workers to contemplate returning to a previous position with their current or former employer. Either way, you will inevitably have to answer questions about your request. Acknowledge the positive aspects of your current job situation while emphasizing everything you can contribute to the company if you return to your former job.

Having confidence in your employer and its leadership helps you feel good about the work you do. Returning to your previous job at the same company may be a win-win if you don’t think the new job is working out for you and management concurs. If you left your job at another company thinking the grass is greener, but realized that the new company’s mission and goals don’t coincide with your own, that’s a justifiable reason for wanting your old job back.

When I worked for ABC Co., I admired the leadership and was confident in its vision for the company. Once I left for XYZ Corp., I realized that my values and goals were more consistent those of ABC.

Although compensation isn’t always the most important reason for a job seeker to accept a position, pay and benefits often play a role in the final decision. If you accepted a job that pays a higher salary but has mediocre benefits, you might want to return to your former job for the benefits.

Example:

I left ABC Co. to accept another job that pays more money; however, I realized that the health and retirement benefits weren’t as good at XYZ Corp. I ended up spending that bump in my salary to pay for additional costs associated with employee benefits.

The potential for career mobility and advancement could have been greater at the former company than at your current job, which is a good reason to return, provided you’re interested in moving up.

As I look back on my time with ABC Co., I realize how much I was learning and the numerous opportunities that were available to me if I wanted to advance in my field. After a year at XYZ Corp., I feel there’s limited potential for professional development and, thus, the chance for my career to grow.

Achieving a work-life balance is extremely important for workers whose outside interests and family obligations consume a large chunk of their time. Therefore, working with a company that allows employees greater flexibility or a company that ensures its employees are able to relax, rejuvenate and decompress is appealing. If you’re interested in returning to your former job, explain that your reasons relate to work-life balance.

Example:

I’m at a point in my life where work-life balance is extremely important to me. At my previous job, I could get my work done and feel comfortable taking annual vacation, and I didn’t worry about being tied to my cell phone. However, with this new job, I’m finding it difficult to keep up with my work and still spend quality time with my family.

Better Use of Skills

Responses to questions about why you want to go back to your old job shouldn’t portray your supervisor or new colleagues in a negative light. Avoid sounding negative or indecisive. Share what you miss about your old job and stress how it perfectly matched your interests and abilities. Mention that the valuable skills acquired in your current job that you can bring back to your former job.

The new position gave me a wonderful opportunity to learn more about software and web design. Those skills would enable me to do my old job better and faster.
