Discussion – Week 2

Strategies for Addressing Questions

Being a full-time mother, employee and student can pose a large deal of stress.  One of my main concerns with these stressors, is how to balance my time as a mother of three and grad school?  According to the International Journal of Doctoral Studies, mothers “found guilt and shame being related to maternal self-discrepancy and the fear of negative evaluation” (Prikhidko, A. & Haynes, C., 2018).  I wonder from those of you who are mothers and working, how are ways that you will have self-care during this stressful time?  I worry, as a mother that I may not be able to perform to the greatest degree in fear of not being present for my children.  Many studies have been completed on working mothers and the success in school.  Mothers “may develop a cumulative disadvantage which may affect their likelihood of obtaining a tenure-track faculty appointment” (Klup, A., 2016).  This article discusses the conflicts mothers in school have for their future goals.

Support Systems – Academic and Professional

In our first assignment, defining a support system was a very important assignment when starting school.  How can I utilize my support system and maintain work responsibilities as a mother?  When utilizing my support system it will be very important to understand my personal student responsibilities.  In order to achieve my goals I need to work well with my support system.   “The student is responsible for reviewing course material, taking exams at scheduled intervals etc., which requires adequate self-regulation skills” (Kauffman, H., 2015) shows the importance of time management and understanding where I may require assistance.  What would be the best way to incorporate my time management and utilization of professional/academic support systems while in school as a mother?  I am hopeful that this class will specifically help me work through my apprehensions of school, motherhood, and work.

In Week 1 you began building a foundation for your success by considering a network; individuals and teams that can help you to clarify and execute on the vision. A network is most helpful when you are comfortable asking questions. Chances are other members of your network have experienced similar questions and may have helped guide others toward resolutions that can be helpful now.

In this Discussion, focus on the questions you are ready to ask as your journey begins. Keep in mind that sharing questions is often a great way to help others who have similar questions—even if they do not realize it!

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on questions or concerns you might have as you begin the MSN program.
  • Consider the individuals, teams, and departments you previously considered in Week 1 and how they may provide support to address these questions and concerns. Then, identify potential individuals, teams, or departments within Walden or your network that you can turn to for assistance in answering these questions and/or concerns.
